DESCRIPTION:Understanding the factors affecting the population dynamics of
seabirds is essential to better inform conservation strategies\, but the
inherent complexity of ecosystems makes the identification of the mechanis
ms underlying population dynamics difficult. Predicting future environment
al impacts is an even greater challenge. We present a multi-faceted modell
ing approach to capture the linkages between physiology\, behaviour\, and
the environment that rests on Dynamic Energy Budget theory and state depen
dent foraging theory. This allows us to explore how growth\, maturation an
d reproduction depend on the acquisition and allocation of energy under di
fferent foraging strategies and environmental conditions. The models are p
arameterized from\, and validated against\, extensive data on albatrosses
obtained by the British Antarctic Survey over the past decades.
