SUMMARY:Transport barriers\, ocean adjustment and a new perspective on the
surface Gulf Stream - Dr. Chris WIlson\, NOC\, Liverpool

DESCRIPTION:Although fluid properties are relatively homogeneous within oc
ean gyres\, jets may act as material transport and mixing barriers and the
refore affect global ocean adjustment. The Potential Vorticity Staircase m
odel provides insight into the dynamics of transport barriers\, and some o
f its aspects are examined in the Southern Ocean. However\, the detailed
dynamics are elusive\, involving both the mesoscale and sub-mesoscale. A
study of the North Atlantic using satellite observations and identificatio
n of Lagrangian coherent structures sheds new light on the behaviour of th
e Gulf Stream and its role as a barrier or blender.
