DESCRIPTION:In the first part of the talk\, we propose and illustrate a re
 finement of Deligne's principle: every infinitesimal deformation problem o
 ver a field of characteristic zero with cohomology constraints is governed
  by a differential graded Lie algebra together with a DGL-module. In the s
 econd part\, we review recent results about the global structure of cohomo
 logy jump loci of rank one local\nsystems. All this is joint work with Bot
 ong Wang.
