DESCRIPTION:Given a complex polynomial with an isolated singular point\, o
ne can associate to it a number of invariants belonging to symplectic geom
etry. The simplest is the Milnor fibre of this singularity: a smoothing of
the fibre of the singular value\, which naturally carries a symplectic st
ructure. We will show that simple surface singularities (i.e. those of typ
e ADE ) can by characterized by symplectic properties of their Milnor fibr
es. More generally\, we will explain how revisiting classical singularity
from the perspective of symplectic geometry\, a program suggested by Arnol
’d\, can yield interesting results for both sides.\n\nThis talk will not
assume any prior knowledge of symplectic geometry.
