DESCRIPTION:Events occurring at the solid/ aqueous interface underpin a va
riety of technologies used in the biomedical and technological fields. Int
eractions occurring at interfaces are also used to good effect in nature w
here biomolecules guide and control the formation of biominerals. My resea
rch group studies biomineralisation in vivo and transitions the mechanisti
c information so gained to laboratory-based reaction systems. A major go
al of our research is to develop a detailed understanding of interactions
between biomolecules such as peptides and surfaces including preformed par
ticles in solution. Using examples from our recent studies\, this presenta
tion will describe our current understanding of the mechanisms of biologic
al-material interactions for a number of inorganic materials.
