DESCRIPTION:*Abstract*: Estimating the behaviour of multiple objects withi
n complex\nsystems is a multi-faceted problem that challenges both theoret
icians\nand practitioners. Even when the dynamics and the observation of t
hese\nobjects in their environment is well understood\, a suitably general
\nmathematical framework is required to translate the modelling choices\ni
nto a proper estimation algorithm. During this presentation\, the\nlimitat
ions of existing approaches from the target tracking literature\nwill be d
iscussed and how these are overcome by improving the\nrepresentation of mu
lti-object systems. Examples and results will be\ndrawn from several appli
cation areas including biology\, space\nsituational awareness and maritime
  surveillance.
