DESCRIPTION:Open quantum random walks are (classical) random variables tha
t describe the movement of a particle on a graph\, influenced "in a quantu
m way" by the internal degrees of freedom of the particle. They seem to be
a natural and useful extension of Markov chains to a quantum setting. The
classical theory of Markov chains contains various concepts\, such as irr
 educibility\, period\, communicating classes\, that can be characterized i
n terms of the underlying graph\, and have implications regarding e.g. the
convergence of the law of the chain. In this talk\, we develop an analogo
us theory for open quantum random walks. This consists of joint work with
Raffaella Carbone\, from the University of Pavia.
