DESCRIPTION:Hardware consolidation in the datacenter occasionally leads to
scalability bottlenecks due to the heavy utilization of critical resource
s\, such as the shared network bandwidth. Storage virtualization at the fi
le interface achieves clear consistency semantics across data and metadata
blocks\, supports native file sharing between clients over the same or di
fferent hosts\, and provides flexible configuration of the time period dur
ing which the data is durably staged at the host side. We improve the dura
bility of shared storage in the proposed Arion system by supporting journa
ling at the kernel-level client of an object-based distributed filesystem.
Over a prototype implementation of Arion that we developed\, we experimen
tally demonstrate improved performance for specific durability guarantees\
, and reduced network and disk bandwidth at the storage servers. The scala
ble deployment of distributed filesystems in multitentant environments is
challenging due to intermediate tran\n slation\n layers required for netwo
rked file access or identity management. We introduce the design of the Di
ke authorization architecture that combines native access control with ten
ant namespace isolation and compatibility to object-based filesystems. We
use machines in a public cloud to experimentally evaluate a prototype impl
ementation of Dike that we developed\n\nBio: Stergios V. Anastasiadis is c
