DESCRIPTION:In a rapidly rotating\, low viscosity fluid\, the onset of con
vection is often oscillatory. Most studies of oscillatory convection use
either the Boussinesq or some other "sound-proof" approximation to filter
out the acoustic modes. However\, it has been shown that these different
approximations produce drastically different results in some cases. In th
is talk I will use oscillatory convection as a test case to compare these
different approximations\, highlighting the importance of energy conservat
 ion.
