DESCRIPTION:The use of corpus data is becoming increasingly popular in app
lied linguistics research and\, particularly\, with Second Language Acquis
ition (SLA) researchers. It is precisely now 10 years that Florence Myles
published a seminal paper that called for the need to develop corpus resou
rces that could meet the research needs of those in the field of SLA. Sinc
e then\, a more fruitful dialogue has emerged between SLA researchers and
corpus linguists.\n\nIn essence\, corpora are principled collections of te
xts gathered with some clear purpose in mind\, typically language research
. A corpus is always motivated and its design principles are robust\, whic
h excludes the idea that any set of texts may qualify as a corpus.\n\nIn t
his talk I will deal with some guiding principles in corpus design and use
and\, in particular\, will discuss the uses of both native and learner co
rpora in different research scenarios. In doing so\, I would like to envis
age future uses and developments at the crossroads of corpus and applied l
inguistics.\n\n*Bio*\n\nPascual Pérez-Paredes completed his PhD in Applie
d Linguistics in 1999 after a research stay at The University of Texas at
Austin and got a permanent position as Tenured lecturer with the English D
epartment at UM in 2004. He is now a University Lecturer with the Faculty
of Education\, University of Cambridge (Research in Second Language Educat
ion).\n\nHis main interests are quantitative research of register variatio
n\, the compilation and use of language corpora and the implementation of
Information and Communication Technologies in Foreign Language Teaching/Le
arning. He has been project coordinator of ERASMUS+ TELL-OP (Transforming
European Learner Language into Learning Opportunities)\, SACODEYL a MINERV
A initiative funded by the European Commission (http://www.um.es/sacodeyl)
\; coordinator in Spain of Corpora for Content & Language Integrated Learn
 ing [BACKBONE]\, a LLP K2 Transversal programme project\, co-responsable f
or the Spanish EFL component of the Louvain International Database of Spok
en English Interlanguage(UCL) and research member of the The International
Corpus of Crosslinguistic Interlanguage (TUFS\, Japan).\n\nSome of his m
ost recent publications include Researching Specilized Languages\,co-edite
 d with V. Bhatia and P. Sánchez\, John Benjamins\, which received the 201
3 AELFE research award\; the co-edition of Software-aided analysis of lan
guage\, with Mike Scott and P. Sánchez\; or research papers on JCR-index
ed journals such as the International Journal of Corpus Linguistics\, Sys
tem\, Language\, Learning and Technology or CALL\, all of them dealing wit
h the interplay of language corpora\, language analysis and language educa
tion. In 2009 and 2010\, he was a Research Fellow with the English Depart
ment in Northern ArizonaUniversity\, developing research with Douglas Bibe
r and Randi Reppen. He has co-edited a special issue for ReCALL journal (C
ambridge University Press) entitled “Researching new uses of corpora for
language teaching and learning”.\n\nHe is also a qualified Official Tra
nslator appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Pascual is\,
among others\, a member of the Scientific Committee of The EUROCALL Revie
w and Research in Corpus Linguistics\, and has acted as a reviewer\, among
others\, for the Journal of Second language Writing (Elsevier)\, System (
Elsevier)\, Language Teaching (CUP)\, ReCALL (CUP) and Computer Assisted L
anguage Learning (CALL) (Taylor & Francis). Pascual Pérez-Paredes is an u
ndergraduate computer scientist and passionate for digital culture and com
 puters.
