DESCRIPTION:Most living or social systems consist of a large number of age
nts\ninteracting through elementary rules involving only neighbouring agen
ts. In\nspite of their simplicity\, these interactions drive the system to
wards a\nself-organized coherent collective behavior. The emergence of col
lective\ndynamics poses many mathematical challenges which will be outline
d in this\ntalk. We will use the example of the Vicsek model (in which sel
f-propelled\nparticles interact through local alignment) to illustrate som
e of these\nchallenges and examples of applications to real biological or
 social\nsystems.
