DESCRIPTION:A long-standing open problem in the representation theory of f
 inite groups is to determine the generic character tables of all finite re
 ductive groups\; these encompass matrix groups such as GL_n(q)\, SL_n(q)\,
  Sp_{2n}(q)\, SO_n(q)\, etc. In this talk I will give an overview of ongoi
 ng work whose goal is to obtain new values of irreducible characters for f
 inite reductive groups at unipotent elements.
