DESCRIPTION:*Abstract*\n\nThe political economy has morphed throughout rec
ent decades into a digitally-structured capitalism. The lecture locates s
ome primary features of this historical process in patterns of corporate c
apital investment in ICTs. It goes on to sketch the development of the po
litics of digitization\, between the 1970s and today. A foremost conclusi
on is that\, in contrast to the unabashed triumphalism that greeted the ri
se of the Internet as a pole of growth during the 1990s\, today we are liv
ing amid both persistent economic stagnation and escalating political cont
ention over the structure and control of the world's information infrastru
cture.\n\n*About the speaker*\n\nDan Schiller\, Professor Emeritus of Libr
ary & Information Science and of Communication at the University of Illino
