DESCRIPTION:The nineteen peri-Antarctic islands of the Southern Ocean and 
 southern extents of the Atlantic\, Indian and Pacific oceans\, are relativ
 ely well known but\, another nineteen islands have also appeared on charts
 . These are all non-existent\, although some have shown remarkable cartogr
 aphic persistence. \n\nThis lecture will describe these islands\, endeavou
 r to account for their 'discovery' and subsequent fate ('expunged from the
  chart'). \n\nNon-existent islands have appeared in all oceans of the Eart
 h - but the far south has a greater preponderance than elsewhere. Illustra
 tions will be provided as far as is practicable.
