DESCRIPTION:Aerosols and droplets play important roles in atmospheric chem
istry and physics\, in the delivery of drugs to the lungs\, the fabricatio
n of functionalised particles in drop drying\, and the atomisation of fuel
s for combustion. We will review the unique insights into droplet properti
es and processes that can be gained by studying individual droplets using
an array of single particle techniques. In particular\, we will use these
techniques to explore the dynamics occurring during evaporation/condensati
on\, the relaxation in shape that occurs following the coalescence of part
icles\, and the time-evolving properties of the optical cross-sections of
 particles.
