DESCRIPTION:Thompson’s group V is probably one of the best known example
  of a finitely presented simple group.  The presentation originally given 
 by Thompson in his notes appears to have remained the best in terms of few
 est generators and relations for decades.  In this talk\, I will give a nu
 mber of different collections of generators\, including a new smaller pres
 entation\, for V and comment on generating sets for its relatives nV.  The
 se will illustrate how Thompson’s group V can be viewed as an infinite a
 nalogue of the finite alternating and symmetric groups.  This is ongoing j
 oint work with Collin Bleak.\n
