DESCRIPTION:In practically all situations scattering resonances can be def
ined as\nlimits of L2 eigenvalues of operators which regularize the Hamilt
onian at infinity. For instance\, Pollicott–Ruelle resonances\nin the th
eory of dynamical systems are given by viscosity limits:\nadding a Laplaci
an\nto the generator of an Anosov flow gives an operator with a discrete\n
spectrum\; letting\nthe coupling constant go to zero turns eigenvalues int
 o the resonances\n(joint work with S. Dyatlov).\nThis principle seems to a
pply in all other settings where resonances\ncan be defined\nand I will ex
plain it in the simplest case of scattering by compactly\nsupported potent
ials. The method has also been numerically investigated in\nthe chemistry
literature as an alternative to complex scaling.
