DESCRIPTION:The need for a new generation of highly trained plant scientis
ts has never been greater. However\, there is evidence to suggest that tra
ditional teaching strategies do not provide undergraduates with a deep und
erstanding of the science\, and that there is a need for innovation in un
dergraduate education. A summer project conducted in the Plant Sciences de
partment will illustrate how partnership between teaching staff and studen
ts can enhance teaching and learning in the biological sciences. This proj
ect has been showcased to Directors of Teaching across the university\, an
d is being used to inform the development of the University's digital educ
ation strategy. In addition\, a research project into how undergraduates r
ead scientific papers across the biological sciences will be discussed\, h
ighlighting the need for teaching scientific skills as an integral part of
  undergraduate programmes.
