DESCRIPTION:In certain crimes\, a perpetrator’s voice may have been hear
d at the scene of a crime\, but\nnot recorded. In such cases\, if the poli
ce have already located a suspect\, a phonetician\nmay be asked to constru
ct a ‘voice parade’ to be used in earwitness evidence. Analogous\nto a
visual identity parade\, the witness is asked whether he or she can pick
out the voice of\nthe speaker heard at the crime scene from a line-up of r
ecordings which includes the\nsuspect’s voice and a number of foil voice
s.\nOne of the most difficult aspects of constructing a voice parade is se
lecting the foil voices.\nAs well as the many practical challenges this pr
esents\, there is currently no general theory\nof what makes voices sound
similar which would enable foil voices to be chosen in a\nprincipled way.
This talk will firstly present a general background to the construction of
\nvoice parades and their associated theoretical and practical issues. Sec
ondly\, an\nexperimental investigation of the phonetic underpinnings of pe
rceived voice similarity for\nStandard Southern British and York Englishes
will be described\, considering the roles\nplayed by aspects of speech su
ch as fundamental frequency\, formant frequencies\, voice\nquality and art
iculation rate\, alongside the effect of the listeners’ own accent backg
round.\nImplications of the findings for voice parade construction will be
  discussed.
