DESCRIPTION:When animals fly\, they must overcome the same physical challe
nges that face manmade vehicles yet their solutions are often remarkably d
ifferent. Recent advances in experimental and computational fluid mechanic
s have enhanced our understanding of how aerial and aquatic animals intera
ct with the fluid through which they move. I will give an overview of the
aspects of my research programme that investigate how insect wing designs\
, and the kinematic patterns they use\, relate to flight performance in te
rms of aerobatic agility\, force production and flight efficiency.
