SUMMARY:Optimal control of wave energy converters - Eric Kerrigan\, Imperi
 al College London

DESCRIPTION:The UK should\, in principle\, be able to generate up to 20% o
f its electrical energy from ocean tides and waves. However\, wave-energy
converter technology is still in a very early stage of development and man
y scientific and engineering challenges need to be overcome in order for w
ave energy to become commercially viable. I will introduce a selection of
challenging control and estimation problems that arise in wave power gener
ation and present some of my group's results in this field. In particular\
, we will show how model predictive control and co-design can significantl
y increase the robustness and power generation of a wave energy converter
system compared to the state of the art.
