DESCRIPTION:The two major architectures in use today were both designed\nf
or personal computers. But now\, personal computers are disappearing.\nIn
their place is a rapidly growing Internet of Things interfacing to a Cloud
of\nmassively parallel computing systems - along with an emerging new\nsp
 ecies - Robots\, or 'cyber-physical-systems'.\n\nClouds need energy-effici
ent computers\; they account for a rapidly\nincreasing proportion of world
-wide energy consumption. They\nwill also need to support a diverse range
of applications using\nthousands of processors in both data intensive and
high-performance\ncomputing. 'Things' need low-power processing along with
real-time\ninterfaces to the physical world. Robots need everything - eff
icient systems\nthat combine real-time interfacing with embedded concurren
t computing for\ncontrol and intelligence.\n\nI will explore the limitatio
ns of our current architectures in\nthese new systems and the problems the
y create for software - tools and\napplications. I will suggest some innov
ations that could overcome these\nlimitations both in new architectures or
in modifications to the existing\nones. Some of these 'innovations' date
 from the 1980s!\n
