robots. - Fabio Giardina (Department of Engineering)

DESCRIPTION:Life has evolved over billions of years on our planet and has
acquired the skill of adaptation to survive in a constantly changing world
. The robots engineers build today work well in artificial environments\,
yet they are struggling to operate in unprepared surroundings. The mechani
cal design of a robot strongly influences the way it interacts with the en
vironment and can substantially reduce the computational burden involved f
or control. In this talk I am going to show several examples which illustr
ate how the mechanical design can help creating intelligent behaviour in r
obots and how the insights can be used to approach the capabilities of liv
 ing systems.
