DESCRIPTION:As students\, how often have we wondered if the theory and con
cepts we learn\, will be used on real projects? \n\nThere has often been d
ebates on disconnect between academia and industry. This presentation aims
to highlight how complex structures are designed and built based on simpl
 e concepts. Be it long span bridges\, a tunnel\, an aircraft wing\, tall b
uildings or underground structures\; they all are fundamentally based on s
imple concepts. This presentation will use simple models to explain the be
havior of complex structures.\n\nWith the advent of computers\, the analys
is and design of structures are undertaken by complex software. While this
has enabled engineers to design quickly\, oversight of basic engineering
concepts has led to many catastrophic failures. \n\nDr Janardhan Sundaram
is Director of Atkins and has over 20 years of expertise in delivering lar
ge scale infrastructure\, rail and building projects in UK\, South East As
ia and Middle East. He is a Chartered Engineer and holds a PhD from Univer
sity of Cambridge. Several case studies will be presented from projects th
at the presenter has worked on across the globe.\n
