DESCRIPTION:Mobile communication is an essential part of modern life and i
s an essential tool for wealth creation\, illustrated by a demand-led comp
ound data growth rate of 40% per year. The rapid growth of the wireless co
mmunications market coupled with the desired to make optimum use of the li
mited available spectrum is driving research into development of novel ant
enna\, materials and wireless communication technologies. The advancement
in these areas enable new applications been constantly developed where co
mplex performance are often required. It is important to have a good under
standing of the communication systems as these ultimately affect the cover
age and reliability of the network radio links. This talk presents some re
search highlights in communication technologies carried out at the UK Nati
onal Physical Laboratory (NPL). This includes electrically small antennas\
 , smart antenna\, wireless sensor networks\, body-worn antennas\, metamate
 rials\, multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO)\, 5G communications\, etc. T
his \ntalk will cover also an overview of NPL as well as research and deve
lopment for electromagnetic technologies and measurements at NPL.
