DESCRIPTION:Contrary to widespread belief\, Winston Churchill was interest
ed in basic\nscience\, especially in its possible military and civil appli
cations.\nAlthough he was not a strong student in technical subjects\, he
privately\ncultivated an interest in science when he was a young man thro
ugh the work of\nHG Wells\, Darwin and others. Later\, in the '20s and '30
s\, he was interested\nin quantum theory and even in the beginnings of nuc
lear science. In this\nlecture\, I will explore how Churchill came to over
see the first nuclear\ndevelopment programme and his subsequent involvemen
t with nuclear weapons\, I\nshall enquire about his judgment in leading th
ese nuclear developments and\nask whether he can reasonably be described a
 s a political pioneer of the\nnuclear age.
