DESCRIPTION:Dr Frank Tietze is going to share his recent research work and
thoughts with us. Frank is lecturer in technology and innovation managem
ent within the Centre for Technology Management (CTM) at the IfM. He is bu
ilding up a research group that focuses on the role of IP and its manageme
nt among the elements of the ISAEP framework (identification\, selection\,
acquisition\, exploitation and protection) for technology development and
innovation.\n\n"As research expands our understanding of the world it con
tributes to the emergence of new technologies. Emerging technologies are c
haracterized by five elements: (i) radical novelty\, (ii) relatively fast
growth\, (iii) coherence\, (iv) prominent impact\, and (v) uncertainty and
ambiguity. When new\, potentially path- and ground-breaking technologies
emerge\, manufacturing firms face a number of challenges. The talk focuses
on the IP associated challenges that different stakeholders face along th
e emergence of new and potential game-changing technologies. The talk will
substantiate that claim and examine a selected number of situations along
the emergence path where intellectual property (IP) decision making and m
anagement is of particular relevance. For instance\, when scale-up centres
bring together players with a major interest in an emerging technology\,
its business model must clearly govern the allocation of jointly developed
IP\, particularly if scale-up partners compete. Any investor being asked
to provide funding for a scale-up centre will most likely question the cen
tre’s IP model. The buns talk will discuss key IP challenges as part of
the process to shape a future IP research agenda within the CTM and IfM. C
ome along to learn more and share your thoughts!"
