DESCRIPTION:Plants are located and colonized by insects using a range of c
hemical signals termed semiochemicals. Together with the pheromones\, that
are used in communication between members of the same species\, semiochem
icals represent new tools for managing insect pests. Evidence for the valu
e of semiochemical based pest management is provided by delivery using com
panion plants in small holder farming in sub-Saharan Africa\, and shows pr
omise for exploitation in intensive agriculture by GM technologies already
being studied at the field level.
