DESCRIPTION:Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the commonest cause of dementia. I
 n the UK alone the annual cost of dementia care exceeds £20 billion and t
 his will grow to unsustainable levels as the prevalence of AD rises in lin
 e with the ageing population.  \nDr Chan will discuss the challenges and o
 pportunities associated with the discovery of effective treatments for AD\
 , early diagnosis and the perception of AD by clinicians and the general p
 ublic. This will cover\, in brief\, work undertaken in Cambridge (and the 
 rest of the world) on the molecular biology of disease and on the translat
 ion of cell and systems neuroscience to clinical diagnostics.\n\nDr Chan i
 s an academic neurologist who leads on research into early AD for the Univ
 ersity of Cambridge.
