DESCRIPTION:Choose how you spend your time and money well\, and you can ha
ve a hugely positive impact on the world. Choose badly\, and you might not
make any difference at all. Nick Cooney will deliver a talk based on his
critically-acclaimed book "How to be great at doing good"\, a practical gu
ide to changing the world. His work has been featured in hundreds of media
outlets\, including the Wall Street Journal\, Time magazine and National
Public Radio.\n\nNick has put his principles into practice when founding "
The Humane League" (THL)\, a nonprofit seeking to improve conditions in fa
ctory farms. All campaigns are evaluated internally by THL Labs\, with the
results used to evaluate impact and improve future campaigns. This commit
ment to self-reflection and transparency has led to them being awarded ‘
Top Charity’ status by independent auditor Animal Charity Evaluators thr
ee years in a row.\n\nAll of us have the potential to be great at doing go
od. All that’s required is that we act with the intelligence and rigour
that those who need our help most certainly deserve. Join us on the 13th t
o find out more about Giving What We Can and 80\,000 Hours. The event will
be followed by a reception with drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and
nibbles.\n\nGiving What We Can: Cambridge is part of an international soci
ety dedicated to eliminating extreme poverty in the developing world. We r
ecommend the most effective\, evidence-supported charities and our members
pledge to give at least 10% of their income to such causes. \n\n80\,000 H
ours: Cambridge is here to give you the information you need to maximise t
he social impact of your career choices. Our advice is based on four years
of research with academics at Oxford and is tailored for talented young g
raduates.\n\nPraise for How to be Great at Doing Good:\n“Too often\, cha
rity makes us feel good\, but fails to do good. This timely\, thoughtful b
ook shows how our contributions can make a bigger difference.”\n- Adam G
rant\, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author \n\n“We
’re accustomed to trying to get the most for our money\, but donating is
the area where this principle is perhaps most important and least appreci
 ated.”\n- Holden Karnofsky\, co-founder and co-executive director\, Give
Well.org\n\n“Cooney gives us a practical guide to examining our charitab
le efforts\, measuring their efficiency\, and maximising their and our imp
act. If you've ever felt you could do more to make the world a better plac
e\, this is for you."\nShushana Castle
