DESCRIPTION:Female relationships across mammals range from highly supporti
ve to intensively aggressive\, sometimes even within the same species. Whi
le differences in female relationships appear to have been fundamental dur
ing the evolution of mammalian sociality\, only few studies have investiga
ted why and how female interactions differ across species . In this presen
tation\, I will show that competition between females is frequently as int
ense as what has been reported for males\, and that variation in the inten
sity of female competition is linked to female reproductive investment. Fi
nally\, I will discuss how competition between females influences cooperat
 ion between females.
