DESCRIPTION:This presentation examines the crossover phenomenon (that is\,
the transcending of age boundaries) particularly in the field of pictureb
ooks. Although picturebooks are conventionally firmly connected with child
ren\, an increasing number of picturebooks tend to blur the boundaries bet
ween the child audience and the adult audience\, hence the term “crossov
er picturebooks”. I will focus on the aesthetic qualities in a potential
ly crossover picturebook through a case study of the adult reader’s and
the child reader’s engagement with the spatiotemporal construction in Co
lin Thompson’s How to Live Forever. Rather than make the results general
izable to a large population\, my aim is to explore a new\, fruitful way o
 f looking at crossover picturebooks.
