SUMMARY:Computation\, Dynamics\, Evidence\, and Experience: Quantum Comput
ing Colloquium - Charlie Bennett (Variously Principal Scientist\, Fellow\,
  IBM Research Headquarters\, NY)

DESCRIPTION:Like other parts of mathematics\, information and computation
theory originated as abstractions of experience\, but their 20th century f
ounders left behind\, as mere physics\, important thermodynamic and quantu
m ideas whose subsequent incorporation has greatly enriched the mathematic
al theory. Aside from its internal elegance\, the new theory provides a d
eeper understanding of natural phenomena\, such as how thermodynamicdisequ
ilibrium enables the emergence of classical phenomenology from quantum law
s\, and the subsequent emergence of "logically deep" structures\, containi
ng internal evidence of a nontrivial history.
