DESCRIPTION:Looking to break into international development? Find out how
from Nick van Praag. With over 30 years of experience in the field\, Nick
will draw on his own life to offer practical advice on how to get started
in this career. After having worked for the UN and a range of internationa
l NGOs\, Nick recently founded a nonprofit Ground Truth\, which seeks to m
ake aid agencies accountable to their ‘beneficiaries’ the global poor.
\n\nNick van Praag’s career spans humanitarian and development work at t
he Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees\, the World Bank and th
e Aga Khan Development Network. He has focused on the linkages between hum
anitarian programs and development throughout his career\, most recently a
s a member of the core team preparing the World Bank’s World Development
Report for 2011.\n\nHis interest in affected populations feedback and hum
anitarian performance stems from his work at the intersection of communica
tion and public policy and his experience of humanitarian aid delivery at
UNHCR. This led him to set up Ground Truth\, an independent program within
nonprofit Keystone Accountability.\n\nGround Truth introduces a new perfo
rmance management tool that brings together traditional social science mod
els of participation\, with an approach to feedback adapted from the custo
mer satisfaction industry. The goal of the project is to take accountabili
ty to the next level by offering humanitarian agencies a light-touch\, pra
ctical way to both listen to the people supposed to benefit from aid and t
o integrate what they learn into the design and implementation of their pr
ograms. \n\n80\,000 Hours: Cambridge is here to give you the information y
ou need to maximise the social impact of your career choices. Our advice i
s based on four years of research with academics at Oxford and is tailored
  for talented young graduates.\n
