 outh African Research Chair in Education and Care in Childhood. \n\nAn imp
 ortant aspect of the paper is the discussion on theoretical challenges whe
 re I present a critical overview of Western and Eurocentric educational an
 d developmental theories and their value within an African context. I poin
 t out that such theories\, albeit useful\, may not necessarily be relevant
  within an African context. I advocate a bio-ecological systems theoretica
 l approach within an African context suggesting that schools must work tog
 ether with local communities as part of an ecosystem to improve the lives 
 of orphans and vulnerable children.
