DESCRIPTION:German intellectuals\, and to a lesser degree the German publi
c\, have long had an ambiguous relationship with the German resistance. Th
e resisters have been seen as traitors\; as the heroes of the Federal Repu
blic\; and as reactionaries who could teach that Republic nothing. Randall
Hansen explores German attempts to block Hitler\, arguing that those who
resisted and disobeyed left two legacies: they provided Germany with a mor
al framework for post-war life\, and they helped ensure that there was a G
ermany that could be physically\, economically\, and morally rebuilt.\n
