DESCRIPTION:We review some recent results\, joint with A. Shao (and partly
 \nVolker Schlue)\, regarding the control one can obtain for some linear an
 d\n   non-linear wave equations\, from Cauchy data on suitably large\n  po
 rtions of time-like surfaces. We obtain control of the solution on\nspecif
 ic space-like surfaces which have the property that any null ray\ncrossing
  the surface ``registers'' on the Cauchy data set.\n  This is applied to u
 nderstand the singularity profile\n  of some focusing non-linear waves. Ti
 me permitting\, we may discuss some\nmore recent work in this connection.
