DESCRIPTION:In this lecture talk\, past and recent activities on robotics
and space engineering in Tohoku University\, Japan are introduced. In the
department of Aerospace Engineering\, Professor Kazuya Yoshida has been co
nducting a variety of research activities on the dynamics and control of s
pace robotic systems ranging from orbital free-flying robots to planetary
exploration rovers. The activities are extended to the development of univ
ersity-based micro satellites and also the terrestrial applications of spa
ce technology\, such as robotic remote exploration for search and rescue m
issions. His technical contributions are evidenced by many space flight an
 d robotic missions\, such as ETS-VII (orbital experiments of a free-flying
space robot)\, HAYABUSA / HAYABUSA-2 (Japanese asteroid sample return pro
 bes)\, RISING / RISING-2 (50 kg microsatellites for science mission) and Q
UINCE (a mobile robot to aid in the Fukushima power plant incident.) The t
alk will highlight the university-based microsatellite development with it
s on-going results\, and the topics around lunar/planetary exploration rov
ers including the challenge to Google Lunar XPRIZE.\n\n*Biography* Profess
or Kazuya Yoshida received B. E.\, M. S. and Dr. Eng\, degrees in Mechanic
al Engineering Science from Tokyo Institute of Technology\, Japan\, in 198
4\, 1986\, and 1990\, respectively. He served as Research Associate of Tok
yo Institute of Technology from 1986 to 1994\, and Visiting Scientist of M
 assachusetts Institute of Technology\, U.S.A. in 1994. From 1995 to 2003 h
e was appointed as Associate Professor\, and since 2003 he is Full Profess
or in Department of Aerospace Engineering\, Tohoku University\, Japan. He
also serves as Director of Center of Robotics for Extreme and Uncertain En
vironments in Tohoku University since 2011.\nIn addition\, he has been con
tributing to space robotics education for international students at Intern
ational Space University in Strasbourg\, France (for Master of Space Studi
es) and various locations in the world (for Summer Study Programs).\nMembe
r of IEEE since 1990\, and a committee co-chair of the Robotics and Automa
tion Society (RAS) Technical Committee (TC) on Space Robotics\, since 2007
