DESCRIPTION:In general relativity\, it is expected that a gravitating\nsys
tem cannot display time-periodic dynamics. This is in contrast to\nNewton'
s theory of gravity\, which allows for periodic motion\, and\ncorrespondin
g gravitational fields. I will explain how the development\nof certain uni
queness theorems for linear waves\, obtained jointly with\nSpyros Alexakis
and Arick Shao\, has led to a proof that any\nasymptotically flat time-pe
riodic solution to the Einstein equations\nmust be time-independent\, at l
east far away from the sources. Thus\ngenuinely time-periodic vacuum space
times do not exist. I will relate\nthe discussion to the so-called final s
tate conjecture\, and the soliton\nresolution conjecture for dispersive p.
 d.e.'s.
