  a democracy has nearly always seemed on the brink of collapse\, overwhelm
 ed by all sorts of malaise - regional differences\, corruption\, criminal 
 organizations\, populist leaders and so on. Much of this negative view is 
 undeniable\, but it is also somewhat myopic. If we put recent Italian poli
 tics and society into long term historical perspective\, the overall pictu
 re becomes a much more complex and interesting one\, with Italy emerging a
 s a country of conflicting tendencies\, not all of which are negative.\n
