DESCRIPTION:Heathcare is going mobile\, there is no denying it\, and this
is not just about healthcare apps becoming mainstream but more fundamental
ly about healthcare being brought to the patient\, where they are or close
to where they are. Point of Care healthcare requires medical technology t
o re-invent itself. The needs of Point of Care medical applications are ra
dically different from those of the central lab. Our speaker will focus on
sensing technologies and how those are evolving to enable Point of Care h
ealthcare.\n\n*Professor Chris Lowe* OBE \, FREng\, FInstP\, FRSC is an Em
eritus Professor with the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechno
logy at the University of Cambridge. His primary research interest is in h
ealthcare biotechnology\, particularly where it is applied to the high-val
ue low-volume sectors of biopharmaceuticals\, sensors and diagnostics and
microbial technology. The work is highly multidisciplinary and not only co
vers aspects of molecular biology\, biochemistry\, microbiology\, chemistr
y\, physics\, electronics and engineering\, but also the entire range from
fundamental science to strategic and applied science\, much of which has
significant commercial application. Professor Lowe has been the driving fo
rce for the establishment of ten spin-out companies\, and has been awarded
several national and international prizes and distinctions\, including
“Most Entrepreneurial Scientist of the UK” Award: UKSEC (2006)\, Queen
’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education: The Royal Anniver
sary Trust (2007)\, Officer of the British Empire (OBE): New Year Honours
(2010) and BBSRC Commercial Innovator of the Year (2011). He holds visitin
g Professorships at the Universities of Bath (UK)\, Lund (Sweden) and the
Australian National University (ANU)(2013).\n\nRefreshments at 1830\, lect
ure starts at 1900.\n\nThis is free to attend. Booking is preferred to gua
