DESCRIPTION:REG is a community of professional poker players interested in
making a positive impact. They recognize that the rationality skills for
maximizing expected monetary value in poker transfer perfectly into maximi
zing the expected impact of charitable donations. The idea behind effectiv
e giving is to rely on science and rational decision-making in order to fi
nd the interventions most effective at reducing suffering in the world.\n\
nREG is collaborating with researchers\, think tanks and charity evaluator
s to provide members with the best information on the most effective givin
g opportunities. Additionally\, REG promotes effective giving to the poker
-interested public and encourages professional poker players to become amb
assadors for this important cause\, by pledging to donate 2% of their gros
s poker winnings quarterly.\n\nIn November 2014\, World Series of Poker Ma
in Event champion\, Martin Jacobson\, donated $250\,000 to Raising for Eff
ective Giving after his big $10m win back in November. \n“The amount I
’m donating doesn’t have a significant impact on my life by any means\
, but knowing it can save other lives makes it a no-brainer.” Jacobson t
old REG. Animal welfare is of particular importance to Jacobson and $125\,
000 of his donation went to effective animal charities\, where it’s beli
eved his money will save more than 300\,000 animals from a life of sufferi
ng on factory farms.\n\nAdriano Manno and Ruari Donnelly will be giving a
short presentation on their organisation with time for questions afterward
 s. We will also be joined by the Cambridge University Poker society to tal
k a little bit about the modalities of earning and giving as a poker playe
 r. The event will be followed by alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and sn
acks.\n\n80\,000 Hours: Cambridge is here to give you the information you
need to maximise the social impact of your career choices. Our advice is b
ased on four years of research with academics at Oxford and is tailored fo
r talented young graduates.\n\nCambridge University Poker Society provides
a fun and safe venue for those who want to learn and practise poker while
at university. They hold cash games at least once a week with stakes rang
ing from £0.10/£0.10 blinds (£10 buy-in suggested) upwards. Cash game p
layers are free to buy in for any amount and leave whenever they wish.
