DESCRIPTION:Most recent hardware advancement towards Non-Volatile Memory (
NVM)\, photonic Interconnects\, and heterogeneous multicore are dramatical
ly changing the hardware architecture of modern computers. However\, impac
ts on the systems software are even more profound. Last time a radical cha
nge in computer architecture was introduced with the DRAM\, the operating
systems and systems software also underwent substantial changes\, such as
virtual memory. These changes also introduce new types of failures and fau
 lt management.\n\nIn HP Labs\, we are pursuing a novel computer\, called T
he Machine. The Machine addresses the aforementioned advancement in hardwa
re technology\, but it also introduces operating systems support and new a
pplications. In this talk\, I will describe how we support NVM at differen
t levels of software stack\, such as managing NVM\, programming NVM\, and
file systems. I will then present the impact on the next generation applic
ations. \n\nBio:\nDejan is a senior researcher and manager at HP Labs\, Pa
lo Alto\, CA [1998-]. His areas of expertise include operating systems\, d
istributed systems\, and systems management. He worked in the OSF Research
  Institute\, Cambridge\, MA [1994-1998] and Institute "Mihajlo Pupin"\, Be
lgrade\, Serbia [1983-1991]. He received his PhD from University of Kaiser
 slautern\, Germany (1993)\; and MSc/BSc from Belgrade University\, Serbia
(1983/86). Dejan has published over 150 papers and 2 books\; he has 16 pat
ents and 32 patent applications. Dejan is an IEEE Fellow\, ACM Distinguish
ed Engineer\, and USENIX member. He was the IEEE Computer Society 2014 Pre
sident. He is a founding Editor-in-Chief of IEEE ComputingNow. Dejan is a
candidate for the IEEE Division VIII Director 2016-2018.\n
