DESCRIPTION:The discovery with SCUBA at the end of the last century of a\n
 population of luminous dusty galaxies early in the history of the Universe
 e\nled to extravagant claims (including by the author) that these objects 
 are\nproto-ellipticals. I will present some recent results\nfrom the SHADE
 S survey that reveal more details about the place of these\nobjects in gal
 axy evolution. I will also say a little about the\nprospects in this field
  with ALMA and the Herschel Space Observatory.
