DESCRIPTION:This paper takes a retrospective look at engaging historical a
ttempts to describe distinctive habits of mind instilled in generations of
inhabitants of the traditional American “South”– effectively begun
by W.J. Cash in his The Mind of the South (1941). The speaker presents a c
ollated list of differences\, observed by regional writers\, between South
ern and outsider Northern patterns of mind “constructed” by their resp
ective regional cultures. As these intangible habits/patterns are diluted
now in a more inter-connected world\, what is continuing relevance of thes
 e reflections?\n
