DESCRIPTION:There is an increasing quantity of road transport data that is
 \nbecoming available. Both historical archives\, in some cases consisting\
 nof decades worth of data\, as well as new types and sources of data are\n
 being made available. In the future we can expect these new forms of\ndata
  to be available in near real-time.  What uses can be made of this\ndata?\
 n\nIn this talk we shall illustrate how road traffic data is helping\nmode
 llers grapple with the nature of traffic flows and congestion. New\nforms 
 of data are also an opportunity for service providers to assist\ntraveller
 s and transport operators. We shall consider a specific\napplication where
  historical data can be combined in a statistical\nmodel with real-time tr
 affic data to make better predictions of\njourney times.  Surprisingly\, o
 ur findings suggest that good\nprediction tools can be constructed that ha
 ve rather modest online\nrequirements.
