DESCRIPTION:“Protein synthesis is a dynamic process that tunes the cellu
lar proteome in response to internal and external demands. Metabolic label
ing approaches identify the general proteomic response but cannot visualiz
e specific newly synthesized proteins within cells. Here we describe a tec
hnique that couples noncanonical amino acid tagging or puromycylation with
the proximity ligation assay to visualize specific newly synthesized prot
eins and monitor their origin\, redistribution and turnover in situ.”\n\
n"The elaborate morphology of neurons together with the information proces
sing that occurs in remote dendritic and axonal compartments makes the use
of decentralized cell biological machines necessary. Recent years have wi
tnessed a revolution in our understanding of signaling in neuronal compart
ments and the manifold functions of a variety of RNA molecules that regula
te protein translation and other cellular functions. Here we discuss the v
iew that mRNA localization and RNA-regulated and localized translation und
erlie many fundamental neuronal processes and highlight key issues for fut
 ure experiments."\n
