SUMMARY:Even Faster VM Networking with Virtual Passthrough - Giuseppe Lett

DESCRIPTION:In past years\, we have shown how to achieve very high network
ing speeds in bare metal and VMs using the netmap framework: embarrassingl
y high packet rates on bare metal\, comfortably good on VMs through conven
tional device emulation techniques. \nIn this talk we show how to fill the
speed gap between HW and VMs with a non conventional use of netmap\, name
ly virtual passthrough. In this mode of operation\, the guest VM uses dire
ctly the host's netmap port (thus saving extra data copies)\, while notifi
cations are dispatched efficiently between guest and host.\nThanks to this
technique we can achieve communication speeds between untrusted guests in
the order of 20 Mpps\, and reach 50 Mpps between trusted guests across ne
tmap pipes.\n\nBio:\nGiuseppe Lettieri is a researcher and lecturer at the
Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione. He received his Ph.D. from
the University of Pisa in 2002. Most of his research has focused on the th
eoretical topic of Abstract Interpretation. In the past few years he has c
ontributed to the development and maintenance of the netmap framework for
fast packet I/O\, including the introduction of netmap pipes\, a very fast
IPC mechanism based on the netmap API\, and the design of ptnetmap\, a ve
ry fast virtual passthrough for virtual machines.
