DESCRIPTION:The physics of quantum degenerate gases with dipolar interacti
ons is emerging as an active area of research in the field of ultracold at
oms. Experimental efforts are following both the route of cooling atomic s
pecies with a large magnetic moment\, such as Dysprosium and Erbium\, and
the one of producing heteronuclear molecules in their ground state which e
xhibit a large electric dipole moment. From the theoretical point of view\
, very peculiar and interesting many-body effects are expected in the regi
me where dipolar interactions dominate. I will review some recent work car
ried out using quantum Monte Carlo methods on the various phases of dipola
r bosons and fermions in single and bilayer geometries. In particular\, I
will discuss in some details the Fermi liquid to Wigner crystal transition
of a Fermi gas in two dimensions and the single-particle to pair superflu
id transition in a bilayer system of dipolar bosons.
