DESCRIPTION:Miying Yang has recently completed her PhD at Centre for Indus
trial \nSustainability\, IfM. She is going to present her research on sust
ainable \nproduct-service systems\, and share her experience of tool devel
opment as \nan approach for bridging the gap between theory and practice.\
n\nProduct-service systems (PSS) are regarded as promising sustainable \nb
usiness models with significant potential to synergise economic\, \nenviro
nmental and social value\, together termed 'sustainable value'. \nThis res
earch investigates ways in which manufacturing firms can \nidentify opport
unities for sustainable value creation in PSS business \nmodels. A practic
al-research tool\, Sustainable Value Analysis Tool\, is \ndeveloped to col
lect data and to provide business support.\n\nThe key research findings in
clude:\n- the proposal of a new PSS classification system based on the own
ership \nof products and changes in ownership\;\n- the introduction of new
  concept\, value uncaptured\, as a novel \nperspective of studying value e
xchange in business models\; and\n- the proposal of a model to understand
how and where value uncaptured \ncan be turned into value opportunities.\n
\nThe findings are used to develop a framework for sustainable value \ncre
ation in PSS business models. The proposed tool has been validated \nand u
sed in workshops for purposes including research\, consultancy\, \nbusines
s education and university education. This research thus makes \ncontribut
ions to both theory and practice in the fields of sustainable \nbusiness m
odels\, sustainable PSS and sustainable value.
